Keep Your Eyes Peeled and Your Identity Secure This Holiday Season

Around this time of year, the sales are hot and everyone is gearing up to buy presents, decorations, clothing and more. Criminals count on these heightened emotions to find easy targets for scams and theft.

Pay attention to your receipts and statements: This is a great way to keep track of spending and manage your holiday budget. It’s also a good reference to verify unknown charges on one of your accounts. Sometimes it could be forgetfulness, other times it could be theft.

Charity Scams: Always do your research before donating to a charity, especially during the holiday season. If you’ve never heard of it before, it only takes a minute to search it online.  Unfortunately, this is often the time of year where we see a rise in charity scams.  If you’d like to give this holiday season, contact your charity of choice directly to find out how you can donate to their organization. If you’re still iffy about giving money, donate your time to an organization in need.

Protect Yourself Online: Don’t let those sales fool you. When shopping online, avoid third-party websites. We’ve all heard the horror stories of ordering things from pop up sites and never receiving them, only to find out the shop has disappeared and you have nothing to show for it. Don’t do what’s convenient, do what’s right.

We hope you’ll keep these suggestions in mind in order to protect your personal information and finances during this busy time of year. Happy holidays!

Clean Out Your Computer on February 13th

What a better way to start your Monday in the office than to clean out your computer? On February 13th, it is National Clean Out Your Computer Day. Here are some simple tips in order to start fresh with your desktop:

Start with the desktop: If your desktop is cluttered, start by clearing out unnecessary files such as saved photos which are no longer needed, documents which could be tucked away in a folder, e-mails, etc. By putting everything in its place, they will be much easier to find rather than having to scan your desktop on a daily basis trying to find your files.

Get rid of excess apps: If there are applications you’ve installed, but never use, they may be taking up memory from your computer, and maybe even slowing it down. You should first check to make sure the application isn’t a necessity to avoid taking a step backwards.

Check for dust and dirt: You will likely be very surprised to discover how much dust your computer is holding, inside and out. The best way to remove dust is by using a can of compressed air. Spray places such as the keyboard, mouse, fan, vent and monitor. Before you do this, it is best to power off your computer to be on the safe side.

Organize your wires: If you notice your computer’s wires are tangled and messy, first unplug your computer completely, untangle the chords and use something like Velcro wrap to keep them all together. This prevents the wires from getting tangled again in the future and it will be easier to see where each one leads.

National Clean Out Your Computer Day is a day to take some time out of your busy schedule in order to perform well-needed maintenance on your computer. We hope these tips will make this process even simpler.

Avoid Becoming a Victim of Cybercrime

We live in a world where the Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, as we are more connected to the Internet than ever before with the use of smart devices – from phones and tablets to cars and medical devices. Business may be affected by Cyber attacks as they expand from tangible to intangible assets such as data, information, and intellectual property, and the potential loss can be costly and devastating.

A recent report from Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty shows cyber insurance premiums will grow globally from $2 billion annually to more than $20 billion over the next 10 years. Most people may not understand the potential loss, but well-publicized security breaches, such as those which struck Target, Home Depot, and Sony, are bringing attention to this looming threat. Agents can do their part by urging insureds to enhance their existing security plans and practice online safety, particularly while using mobile devices and social media.

When it comes to Cyber Security, we must remain vigilant. It is especially important to protect ourselves when connecting to the Internet while at home or on the go. StaySafeOnline.org offers tips and resources on how to safely use the Internet on your day-to-day:

  • Make passwords long and strong: Use a combination of capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Use unique, separate passwords for each account.

  • When using Wi-Fi hotspots: Limit the type of business you conduct and adjust the security settings on your device to limit who can access your machine.

  • Limit the amount of personal information you post online and use privacy settings.

  • Beware of links in emails, tweets, posts, and online advertising. If it looks suspicious, delete it.

  • When available, set the privacy and security settings on websites to limit information sharing.

  • Keep security software current: Having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats.

  • Automate software updates. Keep your operating system and other critical software optimized by setting it to automatically update and install updates to defend against known risks.
