Financial Literacy Month

April is Financial Literacy Month, a perfect opportunity to educate ourselves about personal finances and how to make informed and effective financial decisions, especially when applying for a mortgage, taking out a student loan, or making credit card purchases. By understanding the value of money, how it is earned, how it should be managed, invested, and even donated, we are more likely to make the best choices with our money. Per Money Management International (MMI), many people experience financial difficulties, which significantly impact their everyday lives. Thirty percent of consumers are living paycheck to paycheck, with no extra cash to count on for unforeseen expenses. Any financial decisions - good or bad - can have a long-lasting effect on our lives, and the impact of overspending can adversely affect our financial future.

Establishing and maintaining healthy financial habits is extremely important, and it's a good idea to teach kids money management skills early. As adults, we make important financial decisions every day and we need to understand how to effectively manage our money:

  • Plan your finances and budget accordingly.

  • Manage your cash and credit cards wisely to keep your debt under control.

  • Make knowledgeable consumer decisions. Research prior to making major purchases.

  • Have adequate health, life, property, and liability insurance.

  • Make wise investments. Know the difference between a want and a need.

  • Make investment decisions based on your financial goals.

  • Live within your means and plan for retirement.

The first step in taking ownership of your financial future is to evaluate your current financial situation and establish realistic, achievable financial goals to accomplish a debt-free future. Weigh your options and make informed choices; whether to buy or rent a house, purchase a new or used car, and if you will have enough saved to live comfortably during retirement. Cut back on your monthly expenses and put the extra money in your savings. If you are currently in debt, you many find 21 Habits for Getting Out of Debt very helpful. In addition to these financial calculators, there are many free resources available online to assist in your decision making as you embark on the road to financial success.

Is your home at risk for flooding?

Flooding is one of the most common natural disasters in the United States and one of Florida’s most frequent hazards. There are several reasons why flooding can occur, such as heavy rainfall, storm surge, or river overflow. Depending on your home’s location, it can be at a higher or lower risk for flooding. However, you do not have to live in a high-risk flood zone to experience costly damages from floods. Every home has some level of risk for flood damage, and per the NFIP, roughly 25% of their flood insurance claims paid in 2015, were for policies located in low-risk areas. Just an inch of flood water can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home. For these reason, regardless of your home’s risk level, it is imperative to purchase flood insurance.

Edison Insurance Company offers a certified flood enforcement which provides the flood protection policyholders need. Edison offers a broad variety of flood coverage options not currently offered through the NFIP, or with other private carriers. For more information on how to obtain flood coverage with Edison Insurance Company, please speak with your agent.
As a homeowner, it is crucial for you to understand your home’s flood risk to ensure you are properly covered. For more information on flood risks, click here.

Understanding Flood Insurance

One of the best ways to learn is to follow by example. The photo below is a home affected by a disastrous flood. As you can see, a majority of the home is destroyed, and will require major repair in order for the homeowners to live here again. Now, imagine if this was your home, and you found out none of this damage was going to be covered by insurance. First-time homeowners usually assume homeowners insurance covers everything. Here are some common questions people would ask when found in this situation:

“I have homeowners insurance. The flood happened in my home, so why isn’t it covered?”
  • A typical homeowners insurance policy does not include flood coverage. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, this fact gained publicity when thousands of homeowners submitted claims to their insurance providers and learned the damage would not be covered because it had been caused by a flood. The debate back then was, the damage was caused by wind and not water.

  • An easy rule to remember is, flood is damage from the floor, up and wind is damage from the roof, down. It is important to speak to your agent about your coverage to make sure you have everything you could possibly need.

“Is water damage covered at all?”
  • In terms of insurance, the definition of flood is rising water. Any damage caused by rising water will require its own flood insurance. Damage caused by broken pipes or overflow would more than likely be covered by homeowners insurance, but not because of a natural disaster.

As a homeowner, it is important to know what is covered under your policy and what isn’t. Standard homeowners and renter’s insurance does not cover flood damage. Flood coverage, however, is available in the form of a separate policy from Edison Insurance Company.

Always Have a Plan: Flood Emergency Preparedness

Emergencies can strike at any given moment, which is why they’re called emergencies. By having a solid plan, you can ensure the safety of yourself and your entire family, no matter what comes your way. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

Do I have an exit strategy?
Preparedness begins with the entire family. Set aside some time to sit down and have a conversation to make sure everyone is on the same page. In the event of a flood, how will everyone get out both quickly and safely? Be sure everyone in the household knows to avoid any water six inches or deeper since this amount is enough to knock a small child over or sweep an adult off his/her feet.

Do I have an emergency contact?
Give someone you can trust access to personal information, such as a list of medications for the family, insurance policy numbers, phone numbers, documents, etc. This could be a close friend or family member. You should also designate someone to watch over your children or pets in the event of an emergency. When dealing with the aftermath, you know they are safe and cared for.

Do I know my exits?
Everyone should be aware of every possible exit in the home, including doors and windows. Speak to your younger children about the safest ways to exit and how to calmly do so. It is also a good time to let them know breaking a window or cutting a screen is acceptable in an emergency. However, you should show them the safest ways to perform these actions and make sure they can differentiate an emergency vs. non-emergency.

Do I know exactly what I have?
Documenting your possessions is the best way to ensure your insurance will be able to cover everything. You should take photos and keep a proper inventory of everything, as well as knowing their worth. This is also something you can keep with your emergency contact, or place in a waterproof safety deposit box which can be retrieved during or after flooding.

During a flash flood, water levels can rise drastically, and there will be little time to think. Therefore, it is important to be 100% prepared, no matter what.

Preparing for a Flood

Spring has arrived, bringing heavy rains and increasing our risk for flooding. Floods can occur at anytime and anywhere, are the most common natural disaster in the United States. Here are a few tips to protect you, your family, and home in the event of a flood:

Create an evacuation plan: Having an evacuation plan in place prior to a flood can help prevent property damage and ensure the safety of you and your family. It is important to review the plan frequently with every family member, and to make sure each room in your home has a working exit in case of an emergency. Additionally, it is imperative your family members know not to enter flooded areas on foot, or by vehicle.

Protect your property: Securing your possessions before a flood occurs can significantly reduce damages and expenses afterwards. Always keep valuables and important documents in a sealed waterproof container. If time permits, elevate furniture and electrical equipment to avoid damage.

Stay informed: The National Weather Service (NWS), along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), issue flood alerts and warnings when weather conditions are more likely to produce floods in your area.

Purchase Flood Insurance: Every home is at risk for flooding and flood damage, and many homeowners are not financially prepared for the expenses flood damage can cause. Edison Insurance Company offers flood insurance at competitive rates. Speak with your agent, to learn more about obtaining flood insurance with Edison Insurance Company.

Daylight Saving Time Begins on March 12th

On March 12th, 2017 at 2am, the clocks will spring forward 1 hour, marking the beginning of Daylight Saving Time. For some, the thought of losing an hour of sleep in the Spring is more difficult than adjusting to the extra hour we get in the Fall. Here are some tips to help you quickly adjust this year:

  • Sunrise and sunset will be 1 hour later than the day before. Remember to set your alarms, since your body clock may be a bit off.

  •  Avoid taking a nap in order to fall asleep earlier, helping you wake up the next day. By taking a nap, you are providing your body with extra energy which will only keep you awake longer at bedtime.

  •   Be alert. Give yourself an extra push to get yourself out the door on Monday. Pay extra attention on the road, as you may not be the only tired driver on the road.

  • By eating meals at your normal scheduled times, it will help your body adjust to the time change much faster. Try to keep your schedule as regular as possible.

By embracing this small time change, you will be adjusted in no time. We hope you will take these suggestions into consideration when Daylight Saving Time approaches.

The Importance of Child-Proofing Your Home

According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 2.3 million children are accidentally injured every year and more than 2,500 are killed. Because of this, it is extremely important you take measures to child-proof your home. Here are some tips to keep your children safe in your home:

Hire a professional: If you are worried your “DIY project” won’t do the trick, hire a professional to do the work. This will give you peace of mind and you’ll be certain nothing falls through the cracks.

Get a “baby’s eye view” of your home: You won’t realize how many things a child is able to get into unless you take a look for yourself. As silly as it may seem, get down on your hands and knees and take a crawl through the house. Ask questions such as: “What looks tempting?”, “What would I touch if I were a baby?”, and “What’s within reach?”. Anything which draws your attention should be child-proofed.

Pay attention to all life stages: As your baby grows, you will need to consider reevaluating your home. There will be more things your child can reach and grab, such as items from low surfaces like coffee tables.

Lock up potential poisons: It only takes a second for a child to put something into their mouths. Lock away cleaning supplies such as bleach, along with sharp objects and medicines.

Beware of tiny objects: Keep an eye out for small pieces on the floor such as coins, beads and paper clips which your baby could choke on and avoid buying toys which contain these things. If there are other children in the home who play with small toys, be sure to designate an area where they can store them, away from your baby.

Be wary of visitors: Although you may have child-proofed your home, it doesn’t mean your guests’ pockets and purses are child-proof as well. Babies are curious and will be attracted to new things.

Install gates: This is something a professional may insist on when evaluating your home, but if you are doing it yourself, it is something you should consider. Installing gates in your home allows you to keep your baby in a designated area, as well as away from prohibited dangers such as stairs and open doors. Generally, you should invest in gates which are difficult for children to dislodge or break, but ones you can easily open and close in the case of an emergency.

We hope you will take these suggestions into consideration when child proofing your home. For more information and other ways to keep your home safe, visit www.parenting.com

Travel Insurance 101

Most people often have to think before they add insurance to their travel plans, but the few extra dollars it costs to insure your trip, could actually save you in the long run. A vacation or trip can sometimes cost thousands of dollars, so it is extremely important you cast your safety net.

What is Travel Insurance?

There are several types of travel insurance, including Trip Cancellation, Lost Baggage, Medical, Dental, Emergency Evacuation, 24 Hour Traveler Assistance, Baggage Delay, Travel Delay, and Accidental Death Coverages. Some policies may also offer options for rented cars such as Collision/Damage coverage. There are policies which offer all of these options in a bundle, or separately depending on the type of trip you are taking. In the case you may need to cancel your trip due to illness or unforeseen events, your travel insurance will come in handy.

Trip Cancellation Insurance:

This should not be confused with a Cancellation Waiver, which many cruise and tour operators offer which provides coverage should you have to cancel the trip. Waivers usually cost around $40-$60, but they have limitations, such as the time period in which you may cancel. Most waivers don’t cover you if you cancel right before the trip (which is when most people cancel) or after the trip has begun.

Trip Cancellation Insurance would reimburse you if the cruise line or tour operator has gone out of business, or if you have to cancel the trip due to illness, death, or other scenarios listed in your policy. Even if you or a family member are injured during the trip, most policies would reimburse you for the unused portion of the trip.

The cost of this type of insurance can range between 5-7% of the cost of the vacation. While you may think or hope everything will be fine, it could be in your best interest to consider insuring your trip.

Lost Baggage:

This is every traveler’s nightmare. From the time you check your bags in, there is usually a moment of anxiety until it appears again on the belt at your given destination. This type of coverage comes into effect if your personal belongings are lost, stolen or damaged during travel. It may be a good idea to check with your airline or trip operator to see how much coverage they offer for your belongings.

Medical:

If you or your family member had to be airlifted or transported to a hospital due to an accident, or if you needed to stay in a foreign hospital for an extended period of time, your policy would provide coverage. It should also provide coverage if you needed to fly home because you weren’t feeling well during the trip. You should also check with your current health insurance provider and find out what type of coverage you already have for travel.

Accidental Death:

In the event the worse thing happens, and you or a family member pass away on your trip, travel insurance would provide a variety of coverages. If you already have a life insurance plan, this may be unnecessary, however, taking a moment to learn more about accidental death coverage may be something to consider before embarking on your next adventure.

Certain credit card companies offer travel-related services and coverage and you could also purchase it from either a travel agent or directly from an insurer who specializes in travel-related coverage. Before booking your trip, have a discussion with your family to decide if travel insurance could be beneficial.

We hope these suggestions will help you when making the decision to purchase travel insurance. Safe travels.

Clean Out Your Computer on February 13th

What a better way to start your Monday in the office than to clean out your computer? On February 13th, it is National Clean Out Your Computer Day. Here are some simple tips in order to start fresh with your desktop:

Start with the desktop: If your desktop is cluttered, start by clearing out unnecessary files such as saved photos which are no longer needed, documents which could be tucked away in a folder, e-mails, etc. By putting everything in its place, they will be much easier to find rather than having to scan your desktop on a daily basis trying to find your files.

Get rid of excess apps: If there are applications you’ve installed, but never use, they may be taking up memory from your computer, and maybe even slowing it down. You should first check to make sure the application isn’t a necessity to avoid taking a step backwards.

Check for dust and dirt: You will likely be very surprised to discover how much dust your computer is holding, inside and out. The best way to remove dust is by using a can of compressed air. Spray places such as the keyboard, mouse, fan, vent and monitor. Before you do this, it is best to power off your computer to be on the safe side.

Organize your wires: If you notice your computer’s wires are tangled and messy, first unplug your computer completely, untangle the chords and use something like Velcro wrap to keep them all together. This prevents the wires from getting tangled again in the future and it will be easier to see where each one leads.

National Clean Out Your Computer Day is a day to take some time out of your busy schedule in order to perform well-needed maintenance on your computer. We hope these tips will make this process even simpler.

How Climate Change Can Affect Your Locks

We rely on door locks more than we even realize. They are a part of our everyday routine as we enter and leave our homes and cars. When something isn’t working properly, it puts us in quite a jam. It is the moment we realize the importance of this tool. The most common issue surrounding lock trouble is the weather. As temperatures fluctuate, locks can be easily compromised.

During the summer, many homeowners will experience jammed locks, as a result of expanding frames due to the heat. When this happens, locks become stuck in one position and take a lot of effort to turn. This usually occurs with deadbolt locks which can become compressed in the door while the frame swells.

In the winter, even more homeowners struggle with lock issues due to the temperature dropping too low. On the contrary to summer, the locks will contract, which results in a poor fit between the lock and the door.

You can take preventative measures by making sure you are working with experienced and reputable locksmith companies to ensure you are getting a lock which properly fits your door. This reduces the chances of running into weather-related lock issues. You may also want to take an opportunity to replace your wooden door frame with a more durable option to prevent swelling and contracting due to fluctuating temperatures. Also, try lubricating your locks on a regular basis to make them easier to turn even when the weather is changing. A locksmith can provide you with this service.

The weather can affect your lock function in several ways. If you find yourself running into trouble, it would be best to call your locksmith and have the issue addressed as soon as possible.
