Safety Tips: Kids Walking and Biking to School

The time has arrived, it is back to school season.  Should you live near your child’s school, having your child walk or bike to school is a great way for them to get exercise and reduce air pollution from cars.  However, walking or biking to school may not always the safest means of transportation, which is why you should follow these tips below:

Tips to Tell Your Child When Walking to School:
  • Stay on a safe route with at least one crossing guard at every intersection
  • Walk with at least one friend or sibling
  • Say “no” to strangers who offer rides
  • Do not walk while texting or playing a game
  • Look both ways before crossing the street

Tips to Tell Your Child for Biking to School:
  • Ride on the right side of the sidewalk
  • Wear a helmet
  • Practice taking the bike route to school before the first day
  • Only cross the street when the walking/biking light or crossing guard indicates to do so
  • Try to use hand signals when turning

We hope you relay these tips to your little ones.  This way you can have a worry-free back to school season and feel confident your child will safely get to school.  For more information on tips to tell your child for walking or biking to school, visit healthchildren.org or the National Safety Council.
