National Childhood Injury Prevention Week

September 1st to 7th was National Childhood Injury Prevention Week. According to the CDC, 9.2 million children visit emergency rooms annually, due to unintentional injuries.  Here is some information on common child injuries, and prevention tips:
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development found falls to be the most popular cause of nonfatal injuries for children 0-19 years old, resulting in 8,000 emergency room visits every day. Other common causes of pediatric injuries include:
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Suffocation
  • Drowning
  • Poisoning
  • Burns
Prevent childhood injuries by following these easy tips:
  1. Make sure your child’s car seat is tight.
  2. Secure and anchor home furniture.
  3. Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly.
  4. Move your toxic products and medicines to an area out of reach.
  5. Check for small items to prevent children from choking.
We hope you take these tips into consideration and help prevent childhood injuries. For more information detail on pediatric injuries, visit safekids.org.
