Remember, It’s Just a Sale

Since 2006, there have been a total of 98 injuries and 7 deaths surrounding Black Friday; from trampling, to car accidents, to violence and more. This is where we must ask the question, how much is a sale really worth to you?

In 2011, a 61-year-old Black Friday shopper named Walter Vance collapsed while shopping at Target and went practically unnoticed as shoppers rushed in to snag the store’s deals. Some say shoppers didn’t notice, others say they simply didn’t care due to the 1-day sale. Although shoppers had no legal obligation to help Vance, they did have a moral one.
The same year in Los Angeles, a woman fired pepper spray at shoppers in order to get an advantage over shoppers waiting in line for an X-Box.

This year, we strongly recommend you take into consideration the risk of Black Friday shopping. Remember these things before you head out at midnight:

  • It’s just a sale. Getting items at a lower price will not change your life dramatically.

  • Don’t make permanent decisions based on temporary situations. If you don’t get what you came for, be a good sport and find something else. There is no point in getting into a fight. You knew it was a gamble when you came out in search of the deal.

  • Avoid confrontation as best as you can. If someone isn’t playing fair, avoid getting into a huge argument. Retaliation never really works out in these situations. There will always be people who are willing to do anything in order to get what they want. Those are the people you need to avoid.

  • Leave the kids at home. If need be, hire a babysitter or leave your children with someone you trust and they feel comfortable with like grandparents or aunts and uncles. There is no sense in dragging them out hours after their bedtime just because you want to catch a good sale. Black Friday store openings are no place for children as they could end up seriously injured or traumatized due to the events which take place from year to year. Just because you have a child, doesn’t mean people are going to move aside for you or be nicer.

If you are planning to go Black Friday sale shopping, remember these tips and apply them as you gear up to stand in line at midnight. Stay safe.

5 Ways to Entertain This Thanksgiving

Looking for different ways to entertain your dinner party guests this year? We’ve got your back. Here are 5 different ways to entertain your guests this Thanksgiving:

1. Out with the old, in with the new. Forget tradition, the best way to celebrate is by being yourself. Being creative and inventive is what people will remember the most. Don’t try to mimic what others have done in the past, it’s your dinner this year, so switch it up.

2. Purchase some unique serving utensils. Bright, neon, or themed colors are bound to strike conversation. Times have changed, they don’t always have to be gold or silver.

3. When in doubt, “DIY”. There really is no need to go all out and purchase everything brand-new. You can make most things with simple household items such as dinner placemats, name cards, centerpieces, etc. If you’re thinking about including something on your table, but can’t find it, search DIY projects online and give it a try.

4. Set up forts for the kids. All you’ll need is a few pastel-colored sheets, mini lanterns and pillows for hours of entertainment for the little ones. They’ll glow with color on the outside, making it almost impossible to resist entry. Some children see the kids table as exile and they’re only interested in sitting with mom and dad than interacting with their peers. Instead of setting up the traditional kids table, let them have dinner together in the fort. Don’t worry about the mess, it’s why washing machines were invented.

5. Plan a time for games after dinner. After the table is cleared, bring out some fun games like “Headbands” or “Scattegories”. These games are fun for guests of all ages and are sure to bring out a lot of laughs and create memories for years to come.

In order to achieve the best Thanksgiving dinner, the key is to plan. Being prepared is the best thing you can be this holiday season. Enjoy.

Perfect Timing: DST Ends on November 6th

The clocks will turn back at 2AM on November 6th, 2016, marking the end of Daylight Saving Time. Apart from getting an extra hour of sleep, which we all enjoy, here are some things you’ll need to know and remember:

  •  It will begin to get dark an hour earlier in the evenings. If you have small children, be sure to let them have some play time an hour earlier after school, so their time isn’t cut short. You may also want to re-program your outside lights if they are on a timer.

  • Standard time will be used through March 12th, then the clocks will “spring” forward one hour to commence Daylight Saving Time.

  • Although we are living in the smartphone era, if you have traditional clocks in your home, remember to manually turn them back one hour. This includes your stove and microwave clocks, since most of them won’t reset by themselves. It is very common for people to forget, leaving them an hour behind everyone else.

  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and change their batteries. Nothing is worse than the beeping sound you hear in the middle of the night, reminding you to replace your batteries. Don’t let it remind you; get ahead of the game.
