Time to “Fall Back” for the End of Daylight Saving Time

Edison Insurance Company would like to remind you, on November 4th, we turn our clocks back one hour at 2 a.m., to mark the end of Daylight Saving Time. As we welcome the extra hour of sleep, here are a few tips you should remember about Daylight Saving Time:

  • Most smartphones, tablets, and computers will automatically adjust to the new time. However, do not forget to manually turn back the clocks in your home and appliances.

  • If you have timers for the lights in your home, be sure to reprogram them to adjust to the new time.

  • The end of Daylight Saving Time also serves as a reminder to test the carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in your home.

  • Daylight Saving Time will begin again on March 10, 2019.

Thanksgiving Safety

Edison Insurance Company’s number one priority is the safety of you and your family. As such, we would like to provide you with some important safety tips for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving is a day to enjoy great food surrounded by close family and friends, however, it is also one of the most dangerous days of the year if proper safety precautions are not in place. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires.  Please consider these simple tips to make the most of your Thanksgiving celebrations:

  • Unattended cooking is the number one cause of fires. Someone should always be in the kitchen while cooking your Thanksgiving meal.

  • Keep children away from the stove, hot foods, and liquids.

  • Make sure your kitchen floor is clear of any tripping or slipping hazards.

  • Be sure to cook the turkey and other hot meals to their correct temperatures.

  • Enjoy your meal time around the dinner table, but be sure to refrigerate your leftovers within two hours.

5 Tips for National Package Protection Day

Celebrated annually on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, National Package Protection Day encourages homeowners to protect against package theft. With the millions of packages being delivered to homes this holiday season, it is inevitable some will be stolen. Keep your packages safe by following these 5 tips:

  1. Track your packages online. Be sure to keep an eye on when your packages are set to arrive at your home, so you can make proper arrangements.

  1. Trust in a neighbor or friend. Should you be out of the house for several hours, ask a friend or neighbor to collect your packages for you.

  1. Ship in store. Many retailers allow you to ship items to their store near you. While this may not be as convenient, it does provide additional security. If the retailer you are shopping from does not offer store pick-up, consider shipping your package to your local pack and ship store for pick-up.

  1. Schedule your delivery. Most mail carriers allow you to reschedule the delivery of your packages if you are not going to be home. Some carriers may offer this option for free however, it could cost you a few extra dollars to reschedule depending on the delivery options available.

  1. Install security cameras. A security camera serves as a great deterrent for criminals. Most security systems will send notifications to your phone when there is motion detected at your doorstep. Some security systems also allow you to video conference with someone at your door, which is a great deterrent for thieves.

Although there are many benefits of online shopping and home delivery, do not forget to take heed of some of our safety tips to keep your packages safe this holiday season.
