Make 2019 Your Year to Get Organized

Is your wallet, purse, drawers, cabinets, and counters cluttered with piles of paperwork? If not handled daily, paper clutter can accumulate quickly and become quite overwhelming. Thankfully, with some easy tricks, it only takes a few hours to banish paper clutter and get organized.  With a few of these helpful tips start your year off with a fresh and organized start.

Declutter: Start by gathering all the paperwork in your home. Don’t forget old coupons, take-out menus, and other flyers.

Sort: Once you have gathered all your scraps of paperwork, sort into piles for items you can keep or throw away. Put important documents, such as passports, tax returns, medical files, insurance policies etc. into its own pile for safe keeping.

Shred: Documents with your personal information including your address, phone number, bank account information or social security number should be shredded. In doing so, you are protecting yourself from identity theft.

Store Safely: Your important paperwork, including social security cards, birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports, banking documents, and insurance policies should be stored in a water and fireproof safe.

File: All your other paperwork should be kept organized in file folders in a cabinet or drawer. Consider color coordinating and labeling your files for different topics for easy access.

Go Paperless: Consider scanning your documents into your computer for safe keeping. Most banks and companies offer paperless options to receive your bills and statements via email. Edison Insurance offers our agents and policyholders the option to enroll in “Green Solutions” which will allow you to access your insurance documents and policy information from the convenience of your computer.

Insuring and Protecting Your Valuables

Over the holidays, many may have received new valuable gifts. With the new year here, it is important you turn your attention to insuring and protecting your new valuables. Here are a few things to consider:

Avoid over-sharing: Posting pictures and videos of your new items online can greatly increase your risk of theft. As much as you may want to share your new gifts with family and friends online, you never know who else may see your posts.

Update your home security: If you do not have a home security system, it is a good idea to install one for added security. It is also recommended to keep your valuables locked up in a safe location such as a lock box or safe in your home.

Insure your new valuables: Limits on your homeowners policy may not be enough to cover the cost of replacing your new belongings. Should you lose your items which may be worth more than the limits on your policy, you will be left to pay out of pocket. Luckily, Edison Insurance Company offers Premium Packages which allow for additional coverage for items such as jewelry, furs, and cash. Tips for National Cut Your Energy Costs Day

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to save some money in 2019, cutting back on some regular expenses could be a great place to start. With January 10th being National Cut Your Energy Costs Day, Edison Insurance Company would like to provide some tips to help you save some money on your utility bills.

Cut cooling costs:
Living in Florida, we spend a large amount of energy keeping our homes cool. If you do not have one already, consider switching to a programmable thermostat which you can adjust when you are not going to be.

Unplug:
With all the gadgets we use it should come as no surprise we are spending more and more on electricity to keep all our devices charged or running. Because we have become accustomed to having these items on and charging, sometimes we will leave them plugged in. As difficult as it might be to remember, try to unplug items when they are not in use. This will cut off “phantom” usage which can save you some money on your next electric bill.

Lights:
As always, you should turn your lights off when leaving a room or your home. It is also recommended to switch out regular incandescent bulbs with LED or CFL lights which will last longer and require less energy to run.

Save water:
According to the EPA, the average American family uses over 300 gallons of water per day at home. Consider lowering your water usage by turning off the water while you brush your teeth, reduce your shower duration, and only run full loads of laundry and dishes. Just these few changes can save over 200 gallons of water a month, which can also save you some money on your utility bill.
