5 Tips to Beat the Heat of Summer

Living in the “Sunshine State” there is no better time than the summer to enjoy fun outdoor activities. Whether you are going to the beach or playing outside, many do not realize just how much we are exposing ourselves to the heat and sun.  This exposure can have many negative effects such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and death.  According to the CDC, 95% of heat-related deaths occur during May to September, primarily in July and August. Beat the heat this summer by following these tips:

  1. Stay hydrated by drinking water rather than caffeine and alcohol latent beverages, which cause water loss.

  1. Wear lightweight clothes.

  1. Take breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned area as needed.

  1. Check the news frequently to stay updated on heat-related safety information.

  1. Stay aware of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
    1. Heat Rash Symptoms – sweat buildup causing skin irritation
    2. Heat Cramp Symptoms – muscle spasms and pain
    3. Heat Exhaustion Symptoms – nausea, headache, dizziness, weakness, and rapid pulse
    4. Heat Stroke – no sweating, physically hot, confusion, faints, and seizures

Remember to check up on your friends and family frequently to ensure they are safe from the effects of the heat.  For more information on heat safety, click here. We hope you have an amazing, safe summer with your loved ones.
