Preparations When a Hurricane is Within 36 Hours from Arriving

The best way to ensure the safety of your family and home during a hurricane or tropical storm is to prepare for the worst.  As the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season approaches, we recommend taking some time to have your preparation plans in place. Here are some step by step tips to consider when a hurricane/storm is within 36 hours from arriving.

When a hurricane is 36 hours from arriving, you should:

  • Stay tuned to your television or radio for weather updates and instructions.
  • Restock on hurricane supplies if you have not already.
  • Review your evacuation plan with all the members of your family.
  • Fill your car with gas.

When a hurricane is 36 to 18 hours from arriving, you should:

  • Bring outdoor items inside or anchor objects down to prevent damage from high winds.
  • Put up shutters or protect your window openings.

When a hurricane is 18 to 6 hours from arriving, you should:

  • Charge electronic devices such as your laptop and cell phone, so you have a full battery in case you lose power.
  • Check your television or radio regularly for updates.

When a hurricane is 6 hours from arriving:

  • To have food last longer should the power go out, turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and do not open it unless needed.
  • Close your shutters and stay away from windows.
  • Keep a thermometer in the refrigerator to check food temperatures when the power is restored.

We hope you will not need to use these tips this season. However, it is always important to be as informed and prepared as possible.
