Homeowners Do’s and Don’ts for Filing an Insurance Claim

The need for filing a claim can happen during stressful situations in life like a fire, theft, or storm. We want to ensure homeowners are as prepared as possible should a loss occur. Read some of the simple do's and don'ts to keep in mind when filing an insurance claim.

Do Have a Current Home Inventory

In the event of a loss, having a current home inventory with a list of all your belongings will help when filing a claim. Using your camera or smartphone, take pictures to document the contents in your home. Send the inventory list to yourself via email, making them accessible from another location in case you are unable to get back into your home. Find more tips on how to create a home inventory here.

Don't Wait to File a Claim

When an accident or damage happens at home, it should be reported as soon as possible. If damage occurs, ensure your family's safety first and do what you can to minimize the damage. Always call your insurer or agent first to report your claim before contacting a contractor for repairs.  To file a claim with Edison Insurance Company call 866-549-9672.

Do Document Everything

When safe to do so, take several photos or videos to document the damage of your loss. Capture the damage from multiple angles and distances to help explain the situation to your adjuster. If you're making temporary repairs, document the process and materials used. Keep all your receipts and documents related to the loss, such as alternate living expenses, plumbers, electricians, or contractors.

Don't Assign Your Benefits to a Contractor

Be wary of fraudulent contractors who go door-to-door after a storm wanting to assess the damage of your home for free. These scammers may get you to sign over all insurance benefits and proceeds to their companies as part of the repair process, this is typically called an Assignment of Benefits (AOB). If an AOB is signed, all funds and communication are made through the contractor and homeowners typically lose control of their claim.  Once your insurance carrier issues the settlement funds in the contractor's name, fraudulent contractors disappear from your job site, leaving you to complete repairs on your own.
