Understanding Red Flag Fire Weather Warnings: How to Stay Prepared

Florida’s “winter” months call for clear blue skies, crisp low humidity air, and warm ocean breezes. the perfect conditions for fun times are also the same perfect conditions for wildfires. NFPA’s fire triangle identifies the three components of a fire: fuel (something to burn), heat (something to ignite the fuel), and oxygen.. When there is dry weather resulting in drought conditions and low humidity, mixing with strong winds, the National Weather Service will issue a red flag fire weather warning.

What Does a Red Flag Fire Weather Warning Mean?

A red flag fire weather warning signals a heightened risk of wildfires due to a combination of dry windy conditions and low humidity. The combination of drought conditions along with Florida’s landscape, can make our communities susceptible to fires. The warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will be within the next 24 hours and to take the necessary precautions to keep you and your family safe.

Essential Safety Measures During a Red Flag Fire Weather Warning:

  1. Postpone Outdoor Burning: Avoid using outdoor grills and fire pits in dry areas. If you are allowed to burn debris, outdoor burning bans may also be issued by local fire agencies.
  2. Clear Yard Debris: Remove dried leaves, branches, pine needles, and wood piles from your property. Remember to clean out your roof gutters of any dead leaves and dry vegetation.
  3. Water Your Landscape: Keep grass and plants hydrated to reduce the risk of ignition.
  4. Prepare for Evacuation: Have a fire emergency plan, including an evacuation route and a ready to-go emergency kit. When told to evacuate, leave immediately. Do not return home until cleared by emergency personnel.
  5. Monitor the Threat: Follow local and national alerts and notifications for information and instructions. Sign up for emergency alerts in your area.
  6. Review Your Coverage: Confirm that your homeowners insurance policy covers fire damage and update the policy if necessary. Store copies of your important documents including your policy and home inventory in a watertight, fire-resistant container or in an electronic document locker.
