Sun Safety & Protection Tips

Summer is upon us, and many enjoy spending their days in the sun. Having fun in the sun is one of the things which makes Florida so great, however, can also be dangerous if proper care is not taken. It is important for us to remember the sun can be very harmful due to its UV rays. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause skin damage and skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. However, it is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. May has been recognized as National Skin Cancer Month, reminding us all to understand our risk of skin cancer and engage in sun-safe habits. As such, we would like for you to remember a few of these simple sun safety tips:

Seek Shade: Try to seek shade from the sun under a tree, umbrella, or other forms of shelter. If possible, try to stay out of the sun during the hours of 10 am to 4 pm, as those are the times the sun is the strongest.

Covered Skin is the Safest Skin: If you are planning on being exposed to the sun and outdoors, wear clothing and accessories to cover up as much skin as possible. It is recommended to wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants or skirts, sunglasses, and hats.

Slather on the Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day to all exposed areas of your body. For extended outdoor activity, and especially for children, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreen should be re-applied throughout the day, especially after swimming or excessive sweating.

Grilling Safety Tips

According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 9,600 home fires are started by grills each year in the U.S.  These fires do not only send hundreds to emergency rooms across the country, they also lead to an average of $37 million in damages annually. The month of May is one of the most common months for grill fires. To ensure a fun and safe summer for all, keep a few of these grilling tips in mind:

  • Check for leaks and breaks in your gas tank hoses before firing up your grill.

  •  Clean and remove grease buildup from the grill and tray.

  • Keep your grill at a distance from your home and on a flat, sturdy surface.

  • Never leave a lit grill unattended and keep children and pets at a safe distance.

  • If your flame goes out, wait at least 5 minutes before re-lighting.

  • Have a fire extinguisher nearby.

What to do in the event of a grill fire:

Accidents happen, and in the event of a grill fire, the safety of you and your family should be the top priority. Be sure to extinguish the fire as fast as possible and call 911 immediately. Treat burns as soon as possible. Once the smoke clears, you should assess your property for damages. Should the situation warrant, call us at 888-683-7971 to file a claim.

May is National Water Safety Month

As school lets out for the summer, and temperatures increase, many families spend their days around the water. As such, May has been recognized as National Water Safety Month, bringing attention to practicing safety in and around bodies of water. According to the World Health Organization, 360,000 drowning deaths occur worldwide. Children are at an increased risk of drowning and other water-related injuries. Make water safety a priority for your whole family by practicing these water safety tips:

  • Teach children swimming skills and water safety

  • Never leave children unattended in or around bodies of water. Children should be kept at arm’s reach of a supervising adult.

  • Learn life-saving skills and CPR. In the event of an emergency, first responders may not get there soon enough. Knowing CPR and other life-saving skills could make all the difference in saving a life. CPR classes are offered at many locations. A quick search online can find a class near you.

  • If you are at the beach, be sure to swim near a lifeguard.

  • Clear the pool of toys and other attractants after swimming. Many young children will try to reach for toys and other items in the pool to play with, and if nobody is there to supervise, it could be deadly. It is best to take everything out of the pool to avoid this issue.

  • Equip young swimmers with life jackets.

  • If you have a pool, be sure to share pool safety instructions with your family, friends, and neighbors.

Florida continues to lead the country in drowning deaths.  In 2012, West Palm Beach led the state in drowning deaths and non-fatal hospitalizations with over 49 recorded incidents. These are just a few ways you can practice water safety for you and your loved ones. For more information visit the National Water Safety Month website. We hope you and your family enjoy a fun and most importantly, safe summer.
