Summer is upon us, and many enjoy spending their days in the sun. Having fun in the sun is one of the things which makes Florida so great, however, can also be dangerous if proper care is not taken. It is important for us to remember the sun can be very harmful due to its UV rays. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause skin damage and skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation
, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. However, it is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. May has been recognized as National Skin Cancer Month
, reminding us all to understand our risk of skin cancer and engage in sun-safe habits. As such, we would like for you to remember a few of these simple sun safety tips:
Try to seek shade from the sun under a tree, umbrella, or other forms of shelter. If possible, try to stay out of the sun during the hours of 10 am to 4 pm, as those are the times the sun is the strongest.
Covered Skin is the Safest Skin:
If you are planning on being exposed to the sun and outdoors, wear clothing and accessories to cover up as much skin as possible. It is recommended to wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants or skirts, sunglasses, and hats.
Slather on the Sunscreen:
Apply a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day to all exposed areas of your body. For extended outdoor activity, and especially for children, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreen should be re-applied throughout the day, especially after swimming or excessive sweating.
