Brush Fires in Florida – Tips to Protect Your Home

Wildfires and brush fires have been occurring at alarming rates over the past few years in Florida, destroying homes and thousands of acres of land.  Brush fires in the State occur for several reasons, including, controlled burns, arson, lightning, or an accident from a lit cigarette or from a campfire left unattended. We typically see an increased risk during Florida's drier months (late February through May), although brush fires can occur at any time.

No home is completely fire-proof however, there are steps you can take to limit your damages and protect your property from a brush fire. By preparing your home and property well in advance of a brush fire threat, will keep you and your family safe, as well as saving you money, and aggravation in its aftermath. Here are a few tips:

  • Remove dry or dead vegetation from your property.

  • Keep a maintained lawn by mowing and watering regularly.

  • Remove debris from your gutters, eaves, and roof.

  • Keep flammable liquids in a safe and interior location in your home.

  • Use fire-resistant plants when landscaping your property.

We hope you consider these tips to prepare your home should a brush fire threaten your community. Preparing your home is important, however, in the event of a brush fire, your number one priority should be the safety of you and your family. Make sure you take steps to create and practice your family emergency and evacuation plan with each member of your family. We also recommend checking your homeowners insurance policy to be sure you have sufficient coverage for your home and belongings. Contact your agent should you have any questions or need to make changes to your policy.
